In a remarkable feat, a local SA footy club has etched its name into the annals of the Adelaide Footy League history during round four of the season.
Fitzroy, competing in Division six, delivered an astounding performance, clinching an unprecedented victory of 82.24 (516) to 0 against Elizabeth, on the latter’s home turf. This monumental triumph marks both the largest senior score and margin ever witnessed in the league.
The lion’s share of the credit goes to star forward Josh Rosenthal, who set a new club record by netting an astonishing 29 goals for Fitzroy. This individual achievement stands as the most prolific goal haul in the league since Darren Mitchell’s remarkable 32-goal spree for Hope Valley back in 2019. Adding to the spectacle, midfielder Dylan Richard contributed significantly with 13 goals, while James Ellis contributed 17.
Fitzroy’s coach, Darryl Cotter, a former A Grade premiership player with Elizabeth, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s performance. “Obviously the boys are very happy and we’ve now had a really good start to the year,” he remarked. “We played a good team game, played to our structures and didn’t really have any individuals which was pleasing.”
Cotter’s sentiments were tinged with empathy for his former club. “It was a bit bittersweet, I’ve got a lot of love for my old club and they are in a tough position at the moment.” he shared. “We all want them to survive and want to help out as best we can and the boys were really humble about the win.”
Looking ahead, Cotter expressed optimism about Fitzroy’s prospects, now positioned third on the ladder behind Salisbury and Eastern Park. “We want to use this momentum and continue to play the team game in the right way.”
