Karen Houge planned to come to Adelaide from Norway to perform a burlesque clown show. She scrapped that idea last minute and is here with Dreamgirl instead.
Part performance, part audience games, and part story, it’s a show to get people talking as she poses the question: would you trust a stranger?
The unspoken truth is that if Dreamgirl’s going to work, Houge herself has to trust a room of strangers is willing to be involved. Once we establish our trust in her – could be the feathers, or maybe her eyes – Dream Camp 25 officially opens.
It’s hard to say much without spoiling things. In such a new show Houge brings wit, invention and a lot of heart. Sharing her experiences with migrants crossing Europe has confronting moments, but this isn’t a performance to shock and scare audiences.
It’s funny, playful, inclusive and unexpected. She’s managed to triumph with a show that could fall apart in someone else’s hands – and will be on my mind for a while yet.
Dreamgirl is a reaction to the world around us, and humanity’s capacity to promote some of our worst aspects – if not people. Amongst it all Karen Houge digs for the inherent good in people, and tonight she found it.
