How many music styles can we trace back to a location and moment of origin, with a frankly outrageous cultural influence? From fashion to advertising to Superbowl halftime shows, hip hop is everywhere.
Having established The History of House as a box office hit, Groove Terminator has produced a show he’s wanted to bring to life for years, and this is no lecture.
It’s a party.
In DJ YO! MAFIA’s experienced hands an intro medley opens the show before we’re taken back to August 11, 1973…the night a cultural revolution sparked. From there, A History of Hip Hop is a blast. Track after track, beat after beat, visual after visual, the atmosphere builds, heads nod and hands are in the air. From Grandmaster Flash to Dr Dre, Salt-N-Pepa to Fatman Scoop and Adelaide’s Hilltop Hoods, you know these songs.
Seats empty as people join the party on the dance floor and the cast of dancers, MC Kirk, and vocalist Eliza Wolfgramm – with a stunning Killing Me Softly – don’t let up. YO! MAFIA on the decks keeps it all moving with skill, passion and a smile on her face.
Tonight’s only the second ever show, and like the music it celebrates this will grow, shift and continually evolve.
The history’s there, but this isn’t a show for the head. It’s a party full of heart and soul – a party you don’t want to miss.
