Han Arbuthnott takes the small stage in a small room and delivers a comedy set that’s destined for bigger venues
Rhino Room – Alley Cat
Until March 1
4/5 STARS
They’re a trans comedian and as you’d expect a lot of life experience shapes their routine. But none of its designed to exclude people. When Arbuthnott talks about his gender journey the comedy is broad enough to be relatable to just about anyone.
There are some nice punchlines that get the laughs they deserve, but what’s most impressive is how easily laughter flows throughout the set. In a room the size of the Alley Cat this is crucial, because the crowd quickly relaxes into Arbuthnott’s style and it makes They/Hehe a really enjoyable show.
While his journey is different to what so many of us will experience, he’s happy to share it and it makes for a great routine. They move from gender to dogs to a worrying family history to midnight risotto, and it’s clear Arbuthnott is a natural on stage.
After a solid and enthusiastically received show, they thank us and send us on our way. Based on tonight, the rooms – and audiences – will surely get bigger soon.
